Getting around

Good roads, domestic airlines, bus and rail services mean it’s never been easier to get around Ireland. Hire cars, and chauffer-driven cars and limos can be arranged either prior to your visit or at all major airports and city centre locations, and for bigger groups you can travel by vintage bus, luxury coach or even private jet.

For speed, you can use a helicopter to get from destination to destination – always a great way to impress your guests and a wonderful opportunity to view the stunning landscape from on high.

No matter where you’re traveling from, it’s easy to get around in Ireland.

Car and Limousine Hire

You’ll find that most of the major car hire companies have desks at airports, ferry terminals and cities across Ireland. Car hire companies, in general, don’t rent to those under 21 or over 70 years. All intending drivers need to hold a valid licence. For terms and conditions, always check with the car hire company before you travel.

Car hire tends to be more financially favourable if you make your bookings prior to arriving in Ireland. Make sure to book in advance if you’re travelling during the high season. The majority of rental cars are standard shift (not automatic). If ordered in time, automatic cars are available for an additional charge.

For a list of car hire companies please visit: The Car Rental Council of Ireland.

Helicopters & Private Jet

Many of the more luxurious accommodations around Ireland can organise for you and your guests to be picked up from the airport or a destination in Ireland and brought to the resort by helicopter.

Alternatively, you have the option of either renting or chartering a helicopter, or even arranging a golf trip with a company that uses helicopters to get from club to club. The benefit of this lies in being able to take in a wide selection of clubs in a short space of time. Perfect tee times ahead.

If you want to hire a private jet, there’s no problem there, either. Private jet charter is a great way to avoid the chaos of a busy airport while also being a uniquely memorable and luxurious way to travel.

Flying - Regional Airports

If you need to get around Ireland, there are a selection of operators offering internal flights in Ireland from the international airports of Belfast City, Cork, Dublin, and Shannon as well as the regional airports of Aran Islands, City of Derry, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Knock and Sligo.

Aer Arann serves both the Irish regional and international airports, while Aer Lingus and Ryanair operate between the Irish international airports.

Island Boat Services

The islands around Ireland are fabulous places to visit, so if you plan to embark on a journey to any of the offshore islands, you’ll need to check out boat services well in advance, and check again just before travelling in case of any changes.

Regular island boat services operate to the Aran Islands off the Galway Coast, Rathlin Island off the North Antrim coast, Aranmore Island off Donegal, Clare Island off the Mayo Coast, Sherkin and the Cape Clear Islands off the coast of West Cork.

For more information on any of Ireland's islands please contact one of our Regional Tourist Authorities.
